REVIEW:

We’re only halfway through the season and it already looks like Spartacus, along with his not-so-merry band of rebels, are approaching the end of this long journey. “Blood Brothers” starts out with the former slaves just as we left them, at each other’s throats. It’s brother against brother in Camp Spartacus as Caesar continues to fuel the fires that will lead to the inevitable.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Spartacus and Crixus show so much animosity for each other. We’ve seen them disagree over the past couple of seasons but this episode had me missing those days when the former gladiators down right hated each other. Another fight between the two for dominance of the group would have been great to see but all we’re left with is angry glares, harsh words and empty threats.

Spartacus takes Gannicus and a few troops on a field trip to cut off Crassus’ food supply. A visually pleasing but somewhat empty fight sequence occurs and Spartacus has his victory. I say empty because it’s shot as a mosaic from a distance, which is a neat idea, but there was no immediate perception of risk or danger involved. It was an easy win and that made the massacre more than a little dull. Luckily, “Blood Brothers” more than makes up for this with its final battle.

Meanwhile, Caesar continues to plant seeds of doubt in the minds of the rebels who stayed behind. Caesar has been great to watch these past couple of weeks and at the same time I fear that some of these characters we’ve grown to care about over the last couple of seasons have turned into a bit of a joke. Crixus, who has played a huge part in Spartacus amassing an army of thousands, is easily riled up and angered. Crixus has shown blind rage at times but we’ve seen far more intelligence out of him as well. Albeit, a lot of that has to do with what happened last week but he’s far too easily duped into nearly opening the gates. I’ve always considered him smarter than that.

Agron’s quarrel with Nasir seems a little out of place considering what is going on around them. Over the last few weeks we’ve seen Agron’s jealousy and anger grow ever since Nasir has started hanging around with one of the pirates. I guess some people are the jealous type but I’m not sure where this is going at the moment. In the meantime, Agron needs to simmer down. Nasir made a good point about Agron treating him as a slave. Nothing good comes from jealousy.

Tiberius’ story takes a darker turn than expected this week when he rapes his father’s lover, Kore. Needless to say, the scene was uncomfortable to watch, especially after all the effort Kore had put into trying to get through to Tiberius and make him understand that Crassus had not abandoned him. This was the form of revenge I was hoping we wouldn’t see but I’m intrigued to see how Crassus reacts to this.

Spartacus freeing the captive Romans left Crixus furious but ultimately their friendship was mended when it’s all revealed to be part of a clever plan to trick Crassus. Spartacus does present a clever plan but it’s for not because – pirates.

As expected, the pirates give their services to the highest bidder, who just happens to be Crassus with his endless supply of Roman riches. What ensues is a fantastic battle that has Caesar revealing himself as a Roman citizen and just about everyone scrambling to bring order to chaos. Caesar proves himself more than capable of taking on multiple men and women while also setting fire to the city gates. He even gets a quick stab in on Spartacus. He’s a proven badass and I’d definitely consider watching a series with him.

The cliffhanger is sudden and succeeds in raising excitement for next week’s episode. I’m not sure of Spartacus has it in him to get out of this one but we’re only halfway through the season so he can’t be done fighting quite yet.
